Process Overview.
-
1) Schedule a Free 15-20 Minute Consult Per Partner
We will briefly discuss your reasons for seeking couples therapy at this time and explore how my approach may be of help to you both. This consult can be scheduled at the same time as a couple or at separate times as individuals.
-
2) Choose Your Menu Item
During the consultation, we will determine which of the following menu items below makes sense for your relationship at this time: Couples Therapy, Couples Therapy w/ Affair Recovery, Prepare/Enrich Premarital Counseling, or Discernment Counseling.
-
3a) Discernment Counseling
If your marriage is on the brink of divorce, you will likely choose this brief path first. We will meet for a minimum of one 2-hour session and for a maximum of four 90-minute follow-up sessions. Should you both choose to continue with couples therapy to work on your marriage, you will continue to 3b.
-
3b) Couples Therapy (with optional Affair Recovery)
a) Weekly 80-90 minute sessions. Recommended for couples on the brink, couples with a high degree of conflict, and couples seeking affair recovery.
b) Weekly 50-60 minute sessions. Often chosen by parents with children in the home (and not a lot of spare time) as well as couples with a specific problem they’d like to tackle (e.g. in-law issues, deciding whether or not to have another child, moving past a recent crisis in the relationship, etc.)
-
3c) Prepare/Enrich Premarital Counseling
This is a more structured approach to premarital counseling. It begins with an assessment of your relationship (paid for by the couple) and offers helpful exercises to strengthen communication and dig into important conversations related to marriage - finances, in-laws/family dynamics, raising children, physical intimacy, and so on. This will likely take between 4-8 sessions, but it may transition into Couples Therapy if any other issues arise that the couple would like to tackle.
-
4) Space Out Sessions and End Therapy
As you experience significant progress, I will suggest we begin spacing out sessions to biweekly, monthly, or biannually until you have reached your goals for couples therapy. I also welcome back couples for tune-ups here and there.
